Industrial Radiography

Industrial Radiography

Radiography utilizes very short wavelength electromagnetic radiation, namely X-rays or gamma rays will penetrate through solid media but will be partially absorbed by the medium. The amount of absorption which will occur, depend on the thickness and density of the material the radiation is passing through, and also the characteristics of the radiation the radiation which passes through the material can be detected and recorded on either film or sensitized paper, viewed on a fluorescent screen or detected and monitored by electronic sensing equipment.

This technique involves the use of penetrating gamma or X-radiation to examine parts and products for imperfections. An X-ray machine or radioactive isotope is used as a source of radiation. Radiation is directed through a part and onto film or other media. The resulting shadowgraph shows the internal soundness of the part. Possible imperfections are indicated as density changes in the film in the same manner as an X-ray shows broken bone.

Radiographic applications fall into two distinct categories

Evaluation of Material Properties

Material property evaluation includes the determination of composition, density, uniformity,
and cell or particle size.

Evaluation of Manufacturing and Assembly Properties

Manufacturing and assembly property evaluation is normally concerned with dimensions, flaws
(voids, inclusions, and cracks), bond integrity (welds, brazes, etc.), and verification of proper
assembly of component pieces.

oknath NDT provides radiographic services in both our laboratory and in the field at customer locations. Also, we provide high volume processing of film with a state-of-the-art ecologically friendly automatic processor. Our experienced radiographers are experienced in many different specialty techniques involving geometrically challenged parts.
